Benefits and usages

L-tyrosine is an amino acid derived from the essential amino acid L-phenylalanine. The body uses it to produce key neurotransmitters — dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine — as well as thyroid hormones and melanin.

Cognitive function under stress. Helps preserve working memory, mental clarity, attention and cognitive flexibility during acute stressors such as sleep deprivation, extreme cold, military training or high-pressure tasks.

Fatigue and mental burnout. Replenishes brain catecholamine reserves that become depleted during intense mental or physical load, reducing feelings of mental fatigue.

Endurance support. Recent research indicates single pre-exercise doses may improve time to exhaustion in mentally fatigued individuals, though it does not directly enhance baseline physical performance.

Thyroid support. Serves as a chemical building block, via thyroglobulin, for the production of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Neurological role. Dopamine, derived from tyrosine, is an excitatory neurotransmitter that acts as a mood elevator. Dopamine supplements do not contain dopamine itself, since dopamine cannot cross the blood-brain barrier — they provide tyrosine, which acts as the precursor. Tyrosine also supports the body’s production of epinephrine, better known as adrenaline, which is responsible for the fight-or-flight response and helps muster the muscular strength and endurance needed to cope with stress.

Food sources. L-tyrosine occurs naturally in protein-rich foods: cheese such as parmesan; beef, chicken and turkey; salmon and tuna; and soy products, avocados, nuts and seeds.
