Benefits and usages
Iodine is an essential trace mineral the body needs to make thyroid hormones, which govern metabolism, growth and brain development.
Thyroid function. Iodine helps the thyroid gland produce the hormones T3 and T4 that keep energy levels and body cells healthy. T4, thyroxine, is made from thyroglobulin — a protein derived from L-tyrosine — combined with four iodine molecules, and is the storage form of thyroid hormone. T4 must be converted to T3, which carries three iodine molecules, for the hormone to become active. Once activated, thyroid hormone raises metabolism, supporting energy and healthy weight.
Where T4 is not converted efficiently to T3, cold intolerance, low body temperature and fatigue can follow, and weight management becomes harder. Iodoral provides iodine in both its reduced and oxidised forms, which helps thyroxine cross cell membranes and activate to T3.
Brain development. Iodine is vital for normal growth and neurodevelopment in infants and during pregnancy.
The conversion process. The thyroid gland makes mostly T4, around 80%, which acts as a storage form. T3 is roughly four times more potent and regulates heart rate, body temperature and brain function. Deiodinase enzymes D1 and D2 remove an iodine atom from T4 to form T3.
What properly activated thyroid hormone supports
- Energy and metabolism — the rate at which the body burns calories and converts food into energy.
- Cardiovascular function — heart rate, heart muscle strength and the volume of blood pumped through the circulation.
- Digestion — keeps gastrointestinal motility steady.
- Mood and mental clarity — thyroid hormone influences neurotransmitter regulation.
- Reproductive and hormonal health — supports regular menstrual cycles.
Deficiency. Iodine deficiency occurs when the body lacks enough iodine to make thyroid hormones. It can lead to an enlarged thyroid gland, goitre, and to underactivity of the thyroid. Common signs include fatigue, unexpected weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin and thinning hair.
